A little more about the company’s history
When PEP Stores acquired the Rogut family’s eight-store small supermarket chain in 1979, the Shoprite Group of companies was born.
Shoprite was first launched in Namibia in 1990. Also, it bought the nationwide Checkers chain in 1991. The first store in Lusaka, Zambia, opened its doors in 1995.
In the same year, they bought Sentra, a company that had been serving as a central buyer for 550 owner-managed supermarkets.
This acquisition allowed Shoprite to enter the franchising sector.
The Shoprite Group was included in the blue-chip JSE Top-40 Index in 2008.
In the 2019 Tiso-Blackstar/Sunday Times Top Brand Survey, Shoprite received the Proudly South African Brand Award and was chosen as the top grocery store brand.
Another amazing fact is that the Shoprite Group was rated as the 86th largest retailer in the world in Deloitte’s Global Powers of Retailing 2019 (covering the 2017 fiscal year).
Also, Shoprite opened the doors of a brand-new supermarket in Gombe, Kinshasa, on April 19, 2012, making it the first South African retailer to do so.
What all is said and done, it is safe to understand why working at Shoprite can be an amazing opportunity: by working in such an enormous retail store, not only you will be able to absorb all the experience and knowledge, but also you may be able to build a solid career progression on it.
