AC/DC- Back in Black – Certified units sold: 25 million

The Australian rock group AC/DC’s seventh studio album is titled Back in Black. It was made available on July 25th, 1980 by Atlantic Records and Albert Productions.

After the passing of previous lead singer Bon Scott, lead singer Brian Johnson appears on the band’s first album.

Scott passed away in February 1980 from alcohol poisoning following a drinking binge, which delayed AC/DC’s plans to record a follow-up to their commercial success album Highway to Hell from 1979.

Instead of breaking up, they chose to carry on and hired Johnson, a former Geordie vocalist.

Johnson, Angus, and Malcolm Young wrote the music for the album, which was produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who had also worked on Highway to Hell, over the course of seven weeks in the Bahamas in April and May 1980.

Back in Black was finished and then mixed at New York City’s Electric Lady Studios. The all-black album artwork was chosen as a “sign of mourning” for Scott.

Eagles- “Hotel California” – Certified units sold: 26 million

The American rock band Eagles’ fifth studio album is titled Hotel California.

Bill Szymczyk recorded Hotel California between March and October 1976 at the Criteria and Record Plant studios for Asylum Records’ December 8, 1976, release.

It was also the final album to feature founding bassist Randy Meisner and featured guitarist Joe Walsh, who had taken Bernie Leadon’s place as the band’s original guitarist.

David Alexander’s image of the Beverly Hills Hotel is on the front cover.

The US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart was led by Hotel California. The title track won Record of the Year at the 20th Grammy Awards, and “New Kid in Town” won Best Arrangement for Voices.

Michael Jackson – “Thriller” – Certified units sold: 34 million

The sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson, titled Thriller, was made available by Epic Records on November 30, 1982.

Quincy Jones, who had previously collaborated with Jackson on his 1979 album Off the Wall, produced it.

Every song on Jackson’s album was supposed to be “a killer.” He changed his musical course in response to the ongoing backlash against disco music at the time, resulting in a blend of pop, post-disco, rock, funk, and R&B sounds.

Eagles – “Their greatest hits” – Certified units sold: 38 million

The Eagles’ first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975), was published by Asylum Records on February 17, 1976.

Songs from the band’s first four albums, which were released between 1972 and 1975, are included in this collection.

About the U.S. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 list and held that position for five weeks.

The RIAA’s Platinum certification, which was instituted in 1976 to honor albums that sell one million copies in the United States, was given to this album for the first time.

It spent 239 weeks on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number four on Billboard’s 1976 year-end album chart (as of August 2018).

The album has received 38 times platinum certifications from the RIAA, indicating 38 million copies have been sold in America alone.
