Around the 1840s, railway construction began in Durban and the region surrounding Cape Town.

On June 27, 1860, the first line in Durban was established, made to serve the agricultural production region between Cape Town and Wellington, the original network was built.

The Central South African Railways, the Cape Government Railways, and the Natal Government Railways were all combined by an Act of Parliament in 1910 to form the State-Owned Railway System in the Union of South Africa (31 May 1910 – 31 May 1961), which comprised the four earlier colonies of the Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Orange Free State, and Transvaal (South Africa Act 1909).
