When they started the list of the highest-paid athletes in the world, the highest-paying sport was boxing. Thirty-two years ago, the highest-paid athlete was Mike Tyson, with an estimated value of $28.6 million.

But today, in addition to the appreciation that many sports have gained in recent years, much of the earnings of the world’s top athletes come from the marketing campaigns in which they participate.
