Well, this is a complex question. Every person is unique and so are the ways to learn something.

Some learn best by reading, some by putting it into practice through exercises, some learn best by listening, and there are still those who, in the past, only learned with the help of a tutor who was capable of identifying their learning difficulty and interpreting the subject for them.

Hence, the answer to this question is: that it depends on each child.

Because it is an online platform that will transmit knowledge mainly through a screen, with videos, e-books, and games, it will be up to the guardian to test the child to see if the subject matter was really assimilated or if it was just another pastime for the child like any cartoon.

Parents should also be warned, because since it is something appealing like a cartoon, the child may want to spend more time using screens than is recommended for his or her age.

And for parents, it can be tempting to let the child spend a long time using the app, for it is, after all, educational, isn’t it?

Apps to see who unfollowed you on Instagram

Some people just followed you for wanting something, and then they just vanish. With this article, learn how to find these people.

So, before we talk about the app, here are some recommendations from the American Academy of child and adolescent psychiatry:

  • Until 18 months of age, limit screen use to video chatting along with an adult (for example, with a parent).
  • Between 18 and 24 months, screen time should be limited to watching educational programming with a caregiver.
  • For children 2-5, limit non-educational screen time to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on weekend days.
  • For ages 6 and older, encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens.
  • Turn off all screens during family meals and outings.
  • Learn about and use parental controls.
  • Avoid using screens as pacifiers, babysitters, or to stop tantrums.
  • Turn off screens and remove them from bedrooms 30-60 minutes before bedtime.

Now, speaking specifically about the Khan Academy for kids app, it is a non-profit educational organization that provides free video tutorials and interactive exercises.

Their goal is to get quality education to more and more children across the planet. It does this by offering free-to-use online learning resources for all.

Content for 2-8-year-olds comprises the following topics:

  • early literacy;
  • reading;
  • writing;
  • language;
  • math; and
  • building social-emotional skills.

As mentioned before, this app is very attractive to children as it is packed with characters, videos, and interactive activities that could have come out of a cartoon, which easily grabs their attention.

In addition to video resources and interactive activities, the app also provides some ebooks, pdf material to print and work offline, activity proposals for vacations, and monitoring tools for teachers.

It is up to the parents and teachers to guide the child to the resources available within the app that are most appropriate for the child’s age and learning needs.

It can be used as a primary source of material for a child’s instruction, or as tutoring to help the child solidify what has been taught in school.

Parents may choose to only use e-books for children with reading difficulties. Or even, free up the interactive activities and videos so that the child at least spends his screen time learning something instead of wasting it watching cartoons that don’t offer any useful lessons for the child’s life.

The possibilities are many at Khan Academy. All that is needed is for those responsible to know what is required for their child and to define the features and the time of use of the application.
