A little more of the company’s history

In May 1911, the brand name Volvo was first submitted for trademark registration with the purpose of being used for a new line of SKF ball bearings.

The Latin verb “volvere” is conjugated to signify “I roll.” The notion didn’t last long, as SKF ultimately chose to utilize its initials as the sole trademark for all of its bearing products.

Assar Gabrielsson, a sales manager for SKF, and Gustav Larson, an engineer with a KTH degree, made the decision to begin building a Swedish automobile in 1924.

They planned to create vehicles that could endure the harsh conditions of the nation’s icy roadways and low temperatures.

Activities at AB Volvo started on August 10th, 1926.

The first automobile, a Volvo V-4, came off the assembly line at the Hisingen, Gothenburg, facility in 1927, according to the Volvo Group.

In that year, only 280 automobiles were produced. The “Series 1,” the first truck, made its premiere in January 1928 and was an instant hit, garnering interest from other countries.

Volvo sold 639 vehicles in 1930 and shortly thereafter began exporting trucks to Europe. The cars weren’t well known outside of Sweden until after World War II.

In 1935, when AB Volvo was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, SKF chose to sell its stock in the business.
