The history of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) began with the start of port operations in Nigeria in the middle of the 19th century. Through the Ports Act of 1954, it was formally established as the NPA in April 1955.

The need for effective ports for international trade and commerce became clear throughout the colonial era of British control.

Early on, NPA faced difficulties such as a lack of infrastructure, corruption, and procedural hurdles that impeded effective port operations.
